Player Grade

McLaughlin is a rare example of a “pure point guard” in this league, a player whose focus centers around setting up their teammates, defense and floor-running. McLaughlin could provide some good minutes coming off the bench for the Timberwolves.

The Wolves are lacking slightly with their third string guys, and McLaughlin could be a nice leader for that squad, which will probably also include players like Mitchell Creek and C.J. Williams. Adding a player like McLaughlin to that team could give Minnesota an upgrade for when the starters and second-stringers are in need of a break.

Comparisons can be a sort of a risky game, but if a comparison needs to be drawn, then it could be said that McLaughlin’s ceiling at the moment is a player like Ricky Rubio — a phenomenal playmaker and great perimeter defender who does have a little problem with shooting the deep shot. His floor, and where he probably sits right now, is around the Kris Dunn level.

Ultimately, McLaughlin’s defense and playmaking would be a nice fit for the Timberwolves’ system. He’s proved that he can play with second-tier NBA players, and he would be a good asset to keep around, at least for a year or two.
