While quite a few teams walked away winners of 2019 NBA free agency, others handed out contracts that don’t seem to make a ton of sense.

With the relatively recent influx of cap space that’s spread itself across the league’s landscape, the NBA is as lucrative a profession as there is in the world. Max contracts used to be a sacred standing held only by a select handful of elites. Now, one doesn’t have to even make an All-Star team to secure the bag.

The 2019 NBA free agency period was set to be one unlike any other. Over 40 percent of the entire league would be up for grabs with plenty of money to go around. It was being compared to the infamous summer of 2016, where similar circumstances led to some truly frivolous spending and some of the worst contracts of all time.

When assessing both the winners and losers of free agency, it’s not always the difference between who lands the superstar and which teams strikeout. No matter who your favorite team is able to bring in, any player is worth a chance at the right price.

The challenge from an organizational standpoint is making sure you get as close to that figure as possible in order to better financially serve yourself moving forward. The process is easier said than done, which is why while some players may look good on paper, their acquisition isn’t met with much fanfare.

Some fall flat due to a number that far exceeds their value, or simply because the pairing doesn’t seem to be a fit. Whatever the context may be behind the signing, these five players showed that just because a franchise has money to spend, that doesn’t mean they necessarily know how to use it.
