4. 1996-08 alternate black jersey

This was a much-needed update. These jerseys will be the first ones that a lot of modern Timberwolves fans remember seeing growing up. Sometimes dubbed the “Garnett Edition,” these jerseys were made famous by Kevin Garnett, who had many iconic photos in them.

Of course, it’s not the player that makes the jersey, and these jerseys stood on their own for long after Garnett’s departure, considering that the Wolves brought them back as an alternate jersey for this era. The response from the fans was an overwhelmingly positive one, and it’s easy to see why.

The introduction of black to Minnesota’s jersey rotation may have seemed a bit risky at the time, but it paid off really well. The combination of the color and the green evergreens going down the sides brought the first nature symbolism to the Wolves jerseys, and for once it felt like they had a uniform that represented the state, not just the players on the team.

The upgraded typography on the chest and back also lent itself to a more “natural” or Timberwolves feel, and all in all, these jerseys really stood out when they were on the court. Minnesota only used these throwbacks five times last season, but hopefully we will see them more often in 2019-20.
