2. Freedom for Garland

The Cleveland Cavaliers clearly have faith in Darius Garland becoming a star. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t have selected a prospect who plays the same position as the player they just drafted last year. Having two point guards and only one ball is an obvious problem, meaning Sexton and Garland are going to be stealing shine from one another.

Drafting Garland doesn’t necessarily mean the Cavaliers have given up on Sexton, but it certainly suggests that they are open to the idea of letting their new rookie become their franchise player. Consequently, Garland will need freedom to develop and potentially blossom into the star Cleveland hopes he becomes.

In his brief time with Vanderbilt, Garland averaged 16.2 points per game on an efficient 47.8 percent shooting from deep. He is a gifted scorer, but not a talented playmaker, averaging only 2.6 assists a night and rarely showing a willingness to pass.

It’s pretty clear that Garland is at his best when he is shooting the ball. Because of this, the Cavaliers need to give him complete freedom within the offense to do his thing. If Sexton is in the starting lineup too, it only complicates the situation.
