Detroit Pistons 5 potential targets in 2019 NBA free agency
4. Maxi Kleber
The Pistons currently have Griffin, Andre Drummond and Thon Maker as their power forwards and centers that are under contract for next season. Adding at least one more player, especially one that can shoot, would be a great snag.
Say hello to Maxi Kleber of the Dallas Mavericks. He shot 35.3 percent from 3-point range last season and would give them more spacing off the bench when Drummond is out of the game or possibly even alongside the big man.
Per-36 minutes, he averaged 11.6 points and 1.9 blocks per game. When he was on the floor, he played well, and he didn’t require a lot of touches to do it. Griffin is the only consistent shooter in the frontcourt as things stand, and Kleber would give them some interesting lineups that pulled defenders away from the rim to open driving and cutting lanes for Griffin to find guys for easy baskets.
The issue with Kleber is that he’s a restricted free agent, and the Mavericks have much more cap space than the Pistons. They could choose to let him walk, but they have match rights on any deal he signs.
Detroit shouldn’t go overboard to sign him, as they can always embrace the small-ball movement with Griffin at the center position, but it wouldn’t be the worst idea to have a conversation with him.
