Tim Frazier: 1 year, $2 million (Detroit Pistons)

What better way to replace the consummate backup point guard, Ish Smith, than with the consummate third string point guard, Tim Frazier? The Detroit Pistons needed some guard depth behind Reggie Jackson, who only has one year left on his contract, and they got it between Derrick Rose and now Frazier at the veteran minimum.

Given D-Rose’s injury history, having a capable third-stringer is a good idea. Even in his best post-injury season yet, Rose still missed 31 games. Frazier represents a safeguard for whatever time Rose will undoubtedly miss, capable of filling in as a competent backup but usually being best suited as the third point guard off the bench.

Last year, Frazier averaged 5.3 points and 4.2 assists per game in 59 appearances between the New Orleans Pelicans and Milwaukee Bucks. He shot 36.6 percent from 3, and although he’s undersized at 6’1″, this is a fine depth move.

Grade: C+
