Terrence Ross: 4 years, $54 million (Orlando Magic)

Keeping the band together makes sense for a team that hadn’t tasted the playoffs since 2012 before this year’s first round appearance, but doing so with a four-year, $100 million extension for Nikola Vucevic, and then a four-year, $54 million whopper of a contract for Terrence Ross on top of that, feels a bit shortsighted.

While this Orlando Magic team was undoubtedly more fun than any since the days of Dwight Howard, they still only won 42 games. The front office must be counting on the growth of the younger guys like Mohamed Bamba, Jonathan Isaac and Markelle Fultz, but they’re still raw prospects and Aaron Gordon’s already shown he’s just a very good player, but not necessarily one with a superstar ceiling.

Vucevic and Ross will help bridge the gap between now and the time when Orlando’s youngsters are ready to take over, but this is a significant investment in both — even with Ross coming off a great season in which he averaged a career-high 15.1 points per game on 38.3 percent shooting from distance. Ultimately, this is a lot of money to dish out for two of the best players on the 7-seed in the East.
