Overall

The Sacramento Kings found two diamonds in the rough with Justin James and Kyle Guy. These two player could potentially fill large holes in the Kings’ lineup. James could become a scoring wing to start alongside Marvin Bagley III and Buddy Hield. Guy could could be a more effective backup point guard than Yogi Ferrell and Frank Mason III and on a more affordable contract.

The Kings also made some avoidable mistakes. Instead of using the 60th pick on Vanja Marinkovic, they could’ve selected a better player like Luguentz Dort or Shamorie Ponds. Even taking a chance on someone with the upside of Jontay Porter would have arguably been a better selection.

The lottery pick that the Kings traded away in 2015 proved to be their biggest mistake. They ended up gaining absolutely nothing and losing a top-14 selection. They could’ve used that 14th overall pick to pick up Nassir Little or Sekou Doumbouya. The Kings would be even better if they had a young small forward to grow with the team.

This year’s is worse than most Kings drafts, but they didn’t have their usual top-five pick. This year, their best player came from the second round. They did well with the selections they had, but no one should have too high expectations for players selected that late.
