No. 51 pick: Tremont Waters

It’s difficult to grade late second round picks. Even Tremont Waters’ family wasn’t sure if his pick was really real. Draft night can be confusing for the late picks, with the whirlwind of traded picks that come before, but the slightly undersized guard out of Louisiana State will in fact be joining the Boston Celtics.

Waters likened himself to a dog after a workout for the Celtics that saw him sink 20 consecutive jump shots. He put together a decent college career in two seasons at LSU, where he had a career 55.1 percent true shooting. He will enter the NBA without any of the pressures of being a high lottery or first round pick.

At just 5’11” and 170 pounds, Waters is accustomed to overcoming adversity. He says his biggest goal will be to prove the doubters wrong, and show that size really doesn’t matter — making many think back to former Celtic and Mr. Irrelevant, Isaiah Thomas.

Waters was a versatile offensive scorer in college, with the ability to hit from distance as well as acrobatic finishing talent. He will have to fight for minutes at point guard behind Carsen Edwards and whoever the Celtics bring in at point guard in free agency, whether it be Kyrie Irving, Terry Rozier or the field. However, Waters will certainly have chances to prove he can change the way the league views size at point guard in the same way IT once did.

Grade: B-
