Golden State Warriors: Top 10 moments of the 2018-19 NBA season
4. “We Believe” makes one last return
Win, lose or draw, the 2018-19 season was set to be the last at Oracle Arena before the Dubs moved across the bridge to the Chase Center. Throughout its tenure, there have been a number of special moments at Oracle, including the team’s first ever title in 1974-75 and this very Golden State dynasty.
There will always be one stretch, though, that holds a special place in the hearts of the Bay Area fans. Back in the 2007 NBA Playoffs, the 8-seeded Warriors took down the No. 1-seeded Dallas Mavericks in one of the greatest upsets in all of sports. They became the first team in league history to do so since the NBA expanded to a seven-game first round series, and did so by a convincing average margin of 14.8 points per game.
Their mantra, We Believe, became their staple in the days since. The electric orange along the side of their jerseys became iconic. Throughout this past season, Stephen Curry had arrived at Oracle sporting various throwbacks in commemoration of that team. In the final regular season game at the historic venue, his idea was taken to a whole other level.
The game against the Clippers was set to tip off and the starters in warmups were beginning to undress. It took the fans a few seconds, but upon realizing Golden State was decked out in those throwback jerseys, the arena erupted.
It was interesting to see the likes of Thompson and Durant in these unfamiliar jerseys. At the same time, seeing Curry in his rookie year threads brought back some fond memories of the days where every season wasn’t championship or bust.
Golden State would explode with a 42-18 advantage in the third quarter and go on to win by 27. The win mattered less than the showing of appreciation, one that was about as good as it gets to help commemorate such a special time in the franchise’s history.
