2019 NBA Draft: 5 players with steal potential in the first round
By Nick Crain
Every team dreams of having a draft-night steal. Who are the players in the 2019 NBA Draft who could end up being a major steal for where they are selected?
With the 2019 NBA Draft occurring this week, it’s time for teams around the league to make their final preparations to decide which players they wish to select. Outside of the top three projected picks in Zion Williamson, Ja Morant and R.J. Barrett, the remainder of the draft is very unclear.
Every year there are several first rounds picks who prove they should’ve been drafted much higher than they were.
Obviously, players drafted in the first round are promising prospects. With that being said, many players slipped to later in the first round than they should have. A few recent first round steals include:
- Donovan Mitchell (13th overall in 2017 NBA Draft)
- Pascal Siakam (27th overall in 2016 NBA Draft)
- Devin Booker (13th overall in 2015 NBA Draft)
- Zach LaVine (13th overall in 2014 NBA Draft)
- CJ McCollum (10th overall in 2013 NBA Draft)
- Rudy Gobert (27th overall in 2013 NBA Draft)
- Klay Thompson (11th overall in 2011 NBA Draft)
- Tobias Harris (19th overall in 2011 NBA Draft)
- Jimmy Butler (30th overall in 2011 NBA Draft)
- Paul George (10th overall in 2010 NBA Draft)
Not many franchises have the chance to have a top-three selection very often. Better yet, some of the more consistent franchises rarely have the chance to pick in the lottery portion of the NBA Draft. Due to this, it is extremely important to have a great scouting team and find players that are steals for where they’re projected to be selected.
While the teams who drafted the aforementioned steals are lucky to have made those selections, there are also many players who are drafted too high or shouldn’t have been drafted at all in the first round.
In the upcoming 2019 NBA Draft, there are many players who will end up being solid NBA players. Let’s take a look at five players who have a real chance to be first round draft steals.
