Verdict

Ultimately, the Dallas Mavericks could find themselves in a horrible salary cap situation if they trade for him and he doesn’t fit their system the way he does for Houston.

If the Mavs also strike out in free agency, or if Kristaps Porzingis isn’t the same player that he was before the injury, Dallas could find themselves in a similar situation to the Brooklyn Nets.

It’s not fun being a team that either misses the playoffs or is a low seed that isn’t able to add talent through the draft.

All of these ifs, all the cons in a trader for Capela, however, are outweighed my one factor: Luka Doncic. Doncic balled in his rookie season, averaging 21.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game. He’s a generational talent that alone could lead the Mavs to playoff contention.

Doncic play style has similarities to Harden, and thus makes a trade for Capela a safer move. He could continue to find him for open lobs and dunks while Capela also continues to make plays on the defensive end.

If everything goes their way this offseason, the Dallas Mavericks could be looking at a potential Superteam. Owner Mark Cuban values winning over everything, and would be willing to pay a potentially growing luxury tax bill if his team is contending for a championship.

Capela might not not be the best center available, but acquiring leaves the door open for the Mavericks to add a star player and re-sign Porzingis. The time is now for Dallas to take a chance and try and build a contender.
