Cleveland Cavaliers: 5 options for No. 26 pick in 2019 NBA Draft
By Tony Pesta
1. Daniel Gafford
A near 7-foot, 230-plus-pound beast of a power forward, Daniel Gafford is the prospect that the Cleveland Cavaliers should be hoping to acquire at the number 26th spot.
Right off of the bat, you can see the similarities between Gafford and NBA superstar Anthony Davis. The sheer athleticism and size are very close (Davis obviously having the advantage) and the style of play is nearly identical.
Last season, Gafford averaged 16.9 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game. Using his jumping ability to rebound and block shots, Gafford would give Cleveland exactly what they are lacking.
His presence would instantly improve the defense and help them run in transition more often.
Gafford is great at using his athleticism to act as a rim runner. He can block a shot on one end of the floor and burst up the court to catch a pass and slam down a dunk. If he can improve on his passing ability, Gafford would be a deadly player in transition.
It goes without saying that Gafford is nowhere near as polished as Davis was in college, and he likely won’t become a superstar, but the potential for him to copy AD’s game and become a solid player is there.
As of now, Daniel still relies too much on his raw athleticism, whereas Davis was simply an all-around supremely talented player.
Seeing as how the Cavaliers were a woefully bad defensive team last season, drafting Gafford seems like a no-brainer.
