5. Jaxson Hayes

Jaxson Hayes shot up draft boards during this season thanks to his incredible athleticism and defensive ability. He blocked 2.2 shots per game and was named Big 12 All-Defense, All-Freshman and Second Team All-Big 12.

Similar to Mohamed Bamba on from last year’s Texas team, Hayes will be a great rim protector thanks to his 6’11″ size and 7’4″ wingspan, but will need a few years in the G League or riding the bench. It is unrealistic to think that he could play significant minutes immediately unless he can slide and switch in NBA pick-and-rolls as well as shoot the mid-range jumper consistently.

While Hayes was a 74 percent shooter last season, his range is limited to the paint. He will have to expand his range in order to make an impact in the modern NBA. His physicality comes into question as well. Hayes will need to be a more aggressive rebounder at the next level.

The big man could take over the center role once Ian Mahinmi’s contract expires and Dwight Howard is deemed too old, but could take on a second team role next season.

Hayes will likely be available when the Wizards pick and would be a worthwhile stash for down the road. However, he would not make a serious impact on the team next year due to his youth, as he just turned 19 and still has many unpolished skills.
