Utah Jazz: 5 options for pick No. 23 in 2019 NBA Draft
1. Cameron Johnson
The one player that initially jumps out as far as being a potential fit within the Jazz’s rotation is forward Cameron Johnson out of North Carolina.
If the Jazz strike out when it comes to Tobias Harris, the draft is their chance to select a player that contains similar qualities and characteristics as Harris. Johnson could be that preemptive insurance if he’s still on the board when Utah picks in the first round.
Johnson’s ability to shoot the ball and create for himself on the offensive end of the floor is intriguing enough to make him a nice addition to the Jazz. He can shoot well from 3 and showcased that throughout his time as a Tar Heel. His game would like fit really well next to Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert within the rotation.
Johnson should translate well to the NBA and his game should allow him to transition nicely from the collegiate level to the professional level right out of the gate. That alone is something competitive NBA teams covet and look fondly upon with their first round selection.
One downside to Johnson that many basketball experts have talked about is the fact that he is 23 years old and might have already reached his peak when it comes to his development and skill as a player.
The Jazz might be okay with overlooking that to get a piece for their rotation that can help take them to the next level right away as they try to build onto three straight postseason appearances.
The Jazz do have a few holes to fill this offseason, potentially needing a point guard and a wing, but if they aren’t able to go out and get a player via trade or free agency this offseason, they could definitely turn to Johnson at pick No. 23 and try and incorporate him as a piece within the rotation for the 2019-20 season and beyond.
