Los Angeles Lakers: All-Time NBA Finals team
By Amaar Burton
Point Guard: Magic Johnson
Magic Johnson made himself a legendary champion as soon as possible, winning Finals MVP as a rookie in 1980. When Abdul-Jabbar had to miss Game 6 against the 76ers with an ankle injury, Magic lined up at center and finished with 42 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists to lead L.A. to the title-clinching victory.
A second Finals MVP went to Magic in 1982 when he averaged 16.2 points, 10.8 rebounds, 8.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game as L.A. beat the 76ers again. He posted a triple-double in the clinching Game 6 with 13 points, 13 rebounds and 13 assists, along with four steals. Magic took only three field goals in that game.
Three more titles came in 1985, 1987 and 1988. He was voted Finals MVP for the third time when he averaged 26.2 points, 8.0 rebounds, 13.0 assists and 2.3 steals per game against the Celtics.
Magic’s highlight reel includes what may be the Lakers’ most memorable Finals moment: His running “Junior Sky Hook” with two seconds left that lifted L.A. over Boston in Game 4 of the 1987 Finals.
