The Brooklyn Nets saw their impressive 2018-19 season come to an end with a blowout defeat in Game 5 against the Philadelphia 76ers.

After such a surprising regular season in getting to the playoffs for the first time since 2014-15, the Brooklyn Nets were beaten off the court without much of a fight. Losing Game 5 to the Philadelphia 76ers by a final score of 122-100, the Nets were eliminated from the 2019 NBA Playoffs in a gentleman’s sweep, ending this truly remarkable season on the sourest of notes.

It was a rout from beginning to end, one where Brooklyn didn’t score its first basket until the 6:08 mark of the first quarter, by which point the Sixers had already poured in 14 points. The Nets would finish the frame down by 17 and never got the deficit back to within single digits for the remainder of the game.

D’Angelo Russell was a near no-show in this elimination matchup. The first-time All-Star scored only eight points on 3-of-16 shooting from the field. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson had 24 points off the bench to lead both sides, while Caris LeVert was solid with 18 points in 31 minutes of action.

For the 76ers, four of their five starters scored in double-figures, led Joel Embiid‘s 23 points and 13 rebounds in just 20 minutes of action. Ben Simmons was next on the scoring list with 13 points, along with six assists and five rebounds.

The 2018-19 season was an overall success for Brooklyn, one which should serve as a building block for a bright future. It doesn’t make the sting of this blowout loss any less painful. The Nets were a team that fought hard all year long, and to go out in this fashion is sure to leave a painful taste likely to carry over to next season.
