Cleveland Cavaliers: 3 candidates for the head coach position
By Tony Pesta
2. Becky Hammon
In 2014, Becky Hammon became the first woman to ever earn a full-time assistant coaching job in the NBA. Since she joined the San Antonio Spurs, she has assisted in bringing the team to the NBA Playoffs five times. This helped continue a Spurs streak of 22 consecutive trips to the postseason.
Before joining the Spurs coaching staff, Hammon played 16 seasons in the WNBA. When she suffered a season-ending injury in 2013, Hammon began frequently sitting in during Spurs practices. Gradually, she became more and more involved with the team until she was finally promoted to assistant coach.
The legendary coach for the Spurs, Gregg Popovich, described Hammon as a “Special, special woman” who “knows her stuff”. Popovich went on to say that he hopes other NBA teams can look at how qualified she is and give her a chance as a full-time head coach.
Seeing as how Pop has won five championships and is universally recognized as one of the greatest coaches in league history, his word should go a long way for Hammon. The Cleveland Cavaliers could be the team that decides to give her a chance.
