Predictions

As the prohibitive Eastern Conference favorite and legitimate title contender heading into the season, there is immense pressure on the Celtics to escape a first round matchup that has spoiler written all over for it.

Indiana surprised many with its play following what was believed to be a season-crushing injury, and its continued fight with a defensive acumen and team-friendly style of play will make this group a difficult out in the postseason.

This is going to be a playoff series reminiscent of basketball played in the 1990s. These are two of the best defensive teams in the league, and we should expect nothing more than a maximum effort at all times coupled with immense physicality.

That means this postseason battle will likely come down to the difference in production offensively. The Cs have the best player between both teams in Irving, while Brad Stevens is sure to get his rotation in check in order to maximize their abilities at that end of the floor.

A possible difference-maker has taken place, though in recent days. Celtics guard Marcus Smart suffered a torn oblique and will miss the entire first round, and (likely) any possible second round action Boston sees.

Smart has been crucial to the Cs’ success this season. He started 60 games and brought his traditional gritty attitude, as well as a newfound 3-point shot in the form of a career-best 36.4 outside shooting percentage. It’ll certainly be interesting to see whether or not Boston can manage without its spiritual leader.

Even without Smart, the Celtics are an incredibly deep team capable of battling onward in this first round matchup. Indiana will fight until the very end, but simply lacks the talent necessary to produce points on a consistent basis, especially late in games. For that reason, the Pacers will suffer the same fate as they did against Cleveland last year, only this time a game earlier.
