22. Nuggets vs. Warriors in Week 1, ending on Juan Hernangomez game-saving block

Remember that thing about how the Golden State Warriors didn’t actually ruin the NBA? After submitting one October entry for “Game of the Year,” the Dubs immediately followed it up with another highly entertaining battle, this time against the Denver Nuggets.

In all honesty, this game shouldn’t have been close. However, in a contest where the Nuggets missed a whopping 18 free throws and Jamal Murray went 0-for-9 from the field, a poor 3-point shooting effort from the Dubs led to a tight battle that came down to the final play:

With the Warriors trailing by two, Stephen Curry got going downhill and saw a lane to the basket. He dropped off a perfect pass to center Damian Jones, who squared up with the backboard for a layup, for some odd reason. This gave Juan Hernangomez his opening to make the play of the game, blocking him from behind to secure the win.

Curry finished with 30 points, Kevin Durant added a 20-11-7 stat line, Gary Harris led the home team with 28 and Nikola Jokic chipped in a 23-11-6 line. The missed free throws and 3-pointers were ugly, but everything else about this game was a joy to watch.
