42. Trae Young beats shorthanded Milwaukee Bucks in overtime with game-winner

No, Giannis Antetokounmpo wasn’t playing in this game, but for an Atlanta Hawks team that started the season 6-23, every bit of progress shown over the second half of the season was a welcome sight. Not only that, but this was a damn good game, even without the Greek Freak.

After trailing 43-26 at the end of the first quarter, the young Hawks battled back against the league-leading Milwaukee Bucks. Trailing by 3 with 30.9 seconds left, John Collins missed his game-tying triple, but Trae Young grabbed the offensive board and found an open Alex Len. The big man didn’t miss, hitting the clutch 3 with 19.5 seconds left to eventually force overtime.

Late in overtime, down by one, Young hesitated on the baseline before lobbing up a perfect floater to put his team up one with 6.6 seconds remaining. Sterling Brown made a big-time layup with 1.1 seconds left to restore Milwaukee’s lead, but Young wasn’t done yet.

On the inbounds from the sideline, Kevin Huerter lobbed a pass to John Collins on the block, which was tipped away by Brook Lopez. About 99 times out of 100, that would’ve been enough to end the game. This was the 100th time, as Young was there to collect the tip in midair and direct it back toward the basket. The game-winning shot hit the rim and bounced around a few times before dropping in the cup, giving Atlanta the unlikely victory at the horn.

Young finished with just 12 points, but 16 assists in addition to his two clutch buckets in OT. Brown led the Bucks with 27, while Vince Carter moved into fifth place on the NBA’s all-time games played list.
