Los Angeles Lakers: 3 biggest disappointments of the 2018-19 NBA season
By Tony Pesta
3. Tyson Chandler
The first disappointment on this list is the signing of the defensive big man, Tyson Chandler.
Through the first 11 games of the season, the Lakers had given up 110-plus points in each contest. The Lakers had absolutely no defensive presence in the paint and were desperate to acquire a player that could benefit them on this end of the floor.
Once the Phoenix Suns elected to release Tyson Chandler, the Lakers immediately set their eyes on him. Chandler has been selected to the NBA’s All-Defensive Team three times and also won the Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2012. On paper, Chandler was the perfect player for L.A. to sign.
Sadly, after an initial period of success and optimism, it became clear that the Suns had released Chandler for a reason. Playing in his 18th NBA season, Chandler was noticeably slower and less effective on the court. Averaging just 3.1 points and less than a block per game for the Lakers, Chandler was a shell of his former self.
This signing is, of course, just one of many boneheaded decisions from the Lakers front office this season. As a whole, the organization did a poor job building a championship-caliber team around LeBron James, and the acquisition of Chandler was just another example of that.
