Russell Westbrook: Second player to ever record a 20-20-20 stat line
Russell Westbrook took his ability to record a triple-double up a notch when he recorded a 20-20-20 stat line against the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night.
The Oklahoma City Thunder were able to get a much-needed win against the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday, as they have been falling in the standings due to a tough schedule. In that game, Russell Westbrook was able to record a 20-20-20 stat line, the second such triple-double in NBA history.
The OKC Thunder have not been playing well, as they are 3-7 in their last 10 games. It was good for them to get this win against a Lakers squad that has just about cashed it in for the season.
OKC had the game well in hand by the fourth quarter, and fans were able to enjoy a special moment as Westbrook put his name in the history books once again.
With 41 seconds left, Westbrook had 19 rebounds when he hopped up and grabbed rebound No. 20. Westbrook’s stat line then read 20 points, 20 rebounds and 21 assists. Wilt Chamberlain is the only other player to ever record a 20-20-20 game.
Wilt did so on Feb. 2, 1968, when he recorded 22 points, 25 rebounds and 21 assists as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers. Chamberlain has a lot of records that people thought would never be broken. Westbrook was able to break the triple-double streak record this year with 11 straight and now he has accomplished something else to match Chamberlain.
Westbrook dedicated this game to the late Nipsey Hussle, who was murdered on Sunday in California where Westbrook is from.
According to Royce Young of ESPN Westbrook said:
"“Grateful to play the game, but that wasn’t for me, man. That was for my bro, man. That was for Nipsey.”"
This is Westbrook’s eighth 15-15-15 game, which is second behind Wilt Chamberlain.
It looks like Westbrook will average a triple-double for the third year in a row. He needs three more assists to guarantee the average.
Westbrook has been a model of consistency in the NBA today. He has been on the Thunder his whole career and has become a legend. He will be one of the first legends for this young OKC franchise.
He has a record that is unbreakable. There may not be another player for the next 50 years that averages a triple-double for the season, let alone three years in a row. Remember, it took 55 years from the time Oscar Robertson did it for there to be another player to pull it off.
Russ has been an All-Star eight times and has gone five times in a row. He has been All-Star MVP twice. He is a two-time scoring champ and after this year, he will be a two-time assist champ.
He won an MVP award after a season where he put the Thunder on his back. After 11 seasons and piling up impossible record after impossible record, Westbrook has more than earned the right to be a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer.
The only thing Westbrook has yet to do is win an NBA championship.
