Cleveland Cavaliers: 5 takeaways from the 2018-19 NBA season

1. Collin Sexton is a franchise cornerstone
The Cleveland Cavaliers might have struck gold on the rookie point guard, Collin Sexton. The Young Bull has been on a historic run recently and is silencing all of his doubters. Despite not seeing much team success, Sexton has had a rookie season for the record books.
This year, Sexton broke the franchise record for total 3-pointers by a rookie player with 109 and still climbing. He also became just the 25th player in NBA history to reach 100 3-pointers and 1,000 points as a first-year player. On top of this, Sexton is only the third rookie to ever surpass 2,000 minutes and 16.3 points per game while shooting above 40 percent from the 3-point line.
Sexton had a slow start but finished the year off strong. In the last few weeks of the season, Sexton had an 11-game stretch in which he averaged 24.5 points per game. During this run, he became the first rookie since Tim Duncan in 1998 to record seven consecutive games of at least 23 points.
There is much for Sexton to improve upon. He is far from being an elite playmaker and could benefit from watching more film and understanding how to set his teammates up. Furthermore, his defense is unpolished and again will require hours of film to learn what he can adjust.
Still, the Cavaliers appear to have found a cornerstone of the franchise. Moving forward, Sexton should be a crucial member of the team. Sexton might never turn into a superstar but he has proven that he can one day be a valuable player in this league.
