The competition: Luka Doncic

This year’s rookie class is loaded. It could go down with the likes of the 1984, 1996, 2003 and 2009 as one of the best drafts ever. With such a deep talent pool, there is bound to be steep competition for the Rookie of the Year award.

Luka Doncic is widely considered the favorite for this award, but let’s take a look at his numbers. He has played in 64 games, all of which he has started in. His health has not been a problem either, as he has only missed four games.

His stats have been impressive as well. He is ranked second among rookies in both rebounds and assists per game at 7.4 and 5.7, respectively. He is also leading all rookies in points at 21.0 per game while logging 32.3 minutes per game — another high for first-year players.

On the advanced side, Doncic holds up. Of all rookies who have played 10 or more games, Doncic leads in PIE. He currently has a decent true shooting percentage of 54.8 percent. His VORP and BPM are 3.0 and 3.7, respectively.

His numbers are impressive, especially considering his age and how he will improve in the coming years. Doncic will likely be the hardest person for Bagley to win over.
