5. Coaching change

The Cleveland Cavaliers will likely be making a coaching change before the start of next season. Interim coach Larry Drew was selected to fill the void left by Tyronn Lue but was never intended to be a long-term replacement.

It was reported by Joe Vardon of The Athletic that the Cavaliers have been searching for a new head coach since January. This search is said not to include Drew as a potential long-term option.

As a result, it seems that the Cavs will have a new head coach by the start of the 2019-20 NBA season. This is exciting for a few different reasons, most importantly, it marks the chance for a new era in Cleveland.

A coaching change is something that can help elevate a young group to a new level. This type of culture change is capable of having a significant impact on the performance of the team. For example, look at how Steve Kerr helped the Golden State Warriors, or the way Mike Budenholzer has transformed the Milwaukee Bucks into the best team in the league.

The Cavaliers will not change as drastically as these other franchises have, but it is possible they will benefit greatly from a coaching change. Drew has served his job as an interim coach, but had many problems. Most notably, the Cavs have struggled mightily against zone defense this year and Drew has done nothing to solve this problem.

Hopefully, Cleveland will find a coach that is young and hungry to prove himself. Finding a smart basketball mind to help lead this team will be key to rebuilding the franchise.
