Toronto Raptors: 3 big questions following 2019 NBA All-Star break
1. Can they do enough to keep Kawhi Leonard?
Back when the Raptors traded away DeRozan to acquire Kawhi, some fans in Toronto were upset due to the fact that they traded a fan favorite star guard that loved the city of Toronto more than anything else.
The second reason they were concerned was that Leonard was going to be a free agent after the season. This basically meant that they could’ve traded away their franchise player for a one-year superstar rental.
Kawhi is not like most NBA players. He is not active on social media and he does not enjoy manipulating NBA fans with his words. As a result, if you’re not Kawhi’s agent or close friend, you cannot possibly know what his summer move is going to be.
Even since the season started, we’ve heard of countless rumors concerning the top upcoming free agents like Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant and what their future plans might be. The same cannot be said about Kawhi Leonard, since the only thing we know is that he wanted to get traded to an L.A. team last summer.
Thus, the average NBA fan doesn’t have a clue when it comes to where Kawhi is going to be playing next season, and quite frankly, neither does the Raptors organization.
So what can they do to ensure they keep their superstar prior to next season, thus marking the blockbuster trade a success? Well, since they already pulled the trigger on a couple of moves to further improve their roster, the one thing they must do now is to compete.
There aren’t many players in the league that would abandon a winning situation to move to a borderline playoff team. If the Toronto Raptors make it clear that they can hold their record’s worth in the postseason, Kawhi might end up being up north for a long time.
