1. Perfect Love/Sexton combination

The truest cliche in basketball is the NBA is a superstar league. Ingredients for a championship-caliber roster usually include three All-Star caliber players. The closest thing the Cavs have to All-Stars are Love and Sexton.

Love just signed a hefty contract. Sexton was the team’s lottery pick this past summer. For now, it appears — although you never know with Love — the two will be paired together for the better part of the next half-decade. They’re the core of this squad, the bricks, wood and cement supporting the rebuild. So they need to learn to jell like Dr. Scholl’s.

The good news is the two possess very compatible styles of play. Sexton is gritty point guard with a nose for the rim and a knack for playing physical defense, but his shot lacks consistency. Sexton’s stat line of 15.1 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game while shooting 40.8 percent from the field surprises few.

Love is one of the better shooting bigs of his generation. He’s also a gifted back-to-the-basket scorer. Still, his nice streak on defense is perpetual, and he’s never been one to create off the dribble. The two are perfect opposites.

The bad news they’ve had little time to play together since the season began. That will change in the second half, with the two seemingly in good health. Love appears ready to lead. Sexton appears ready to grow.

It’s time to see if these two can co-exist as the team’s future second and third options on a roster whose best player will hopefully come via the draft in June.
