There is no better time than the present, unless you are the Cleveland Cavaliers. Here are four ways the team sets itself up well for the future.

If anyone understands how quickly a franchise’s fortunes can turn, it’s Cleveland Cavaliers fans. Lady Luck blessed the team with three first overall picks over the last eight years. At this rate, the factory is going to run out of Cavaliers ping pong balls.

To Cleveland’s credit, it’s avoided NBA purgatory better than anyone. It’s been more than a decade since the Cavs finished with a win total in the 40s. Of course, the ever-migrating LeBron James has something to do with that.

The point is, Cavs fans get the NBA. One year things are bad and the next, with the help of free agency or the draft, they are good. So it’s imperative for owners to prep their rosters with players ready to help the team compete when the time comes.

It’s kind of like that saying, “dress for the job you want to have.” Teams need begin dressing their roster for success, even when their record is 12-46.

The smart aleck in the crowd will shout “tank.” Okay, everyone knows it’s ideal for Cleveland to own the best chance at the No. 1 overall pick, but to do so, it only has to finish with one of the three worst records in the league.

Apart from that goal, here are four more for Cleveland following the 2019 NBA All-Star break.
