4. Avery Johnson

As mentioned in Marc Spears’ tweet, another name with possible connections to the Pelicans is Avery Johnson. Currently the head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide’s basketball team, Johnson has no executive experience.

Following his NBA playing career with the Seattle SuperSonics, Dallas Mavericks, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets and Golden State Warriors, Johnson coached both the Mavericks and the New Jersey Nets, and was coach of the Nets for the first couple months of their first season in Brooklyn before being relieved of his duties in December of 2012.

Much like Isiah Thomas, Avery Johnson should be considered a long shot, albeit without the same kind of baggage Thomas would bring to the table. Johnson has coached the Crimson Tide since 2015 and led them to their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2012 just a year ago and doesn’t appear to be looking for a change of employment.

Other than Spears’ tweet, there doesn’t appear to be much national consideration on Johnson’s candidacy for the Pelicans’ job.
