Ranking the 5 events of 2019 NBA All-Star Weekend
2. MTN DEW 3-Point Contest
The field:
- Devin Booker
- Seth Curry
- Stephen Curry
- Danny Green
- Joe Harris
- Buddy Hield
- Damian Lillard
- Khris Middleton
- Dirk Nowitzki
- Kemba Walker
The most entertaining event of All-Star Saturday night is simply watching players shoot 3-pointers. Its rising above the Dunk Contest symbolizes the transition in the NBA with outside shooting being at the forefront of everybody’s team-building philosophies (sans the Los Angeles Lakers), and this field is stacked.
Joe Harris and Danny Green are the prototypical 3-and-D players that have the accuracy to advance in the competition. Kemba Walker represents the hometown Charlotte Hornets, yet isn’t one of the favorites to win. All-Stars Khris Middleton and Damian Lillard are also not among the the top contenders to win this contest.
Devin Booker, the defending champ, and Buddy Hield are the young bucks in a field of veteran sharpshooters, but have the shooting stroke to best the field — something Booker showed last year. The field up to this point is solid, but the next three candidates take it over the top.
There won’t be many more opportunities to see Dirk Nowitzki shoot from deep, especially with him receiving limited playing time for the Dallas Mavericks. So Dirk agreeing to be a part of this competition is awesome. He’s the best shooting big ever and it’s only right his final All-Star weekend includes this event.
But everybody knows the main reason everybody will be tuning into this contest: the homecoming for Seth and Stephen Curry. They are elite shooters who grew up in North Carolina and their pops, Dell Curry, is the all-time leader in games played and second in scoring for the Hornets, on top of being one of the NBA’s best shooters in his day. The Curry brothers getting heat checks in this contest could be the top moment of the weekend if it comes to life.
Winner: Stephen Curry over Buddy Hield in the final
