Sacramento Kings: Ranking the trade deadline deals
Trade No. 1
In their best trade in years, the Kings brought in a forward who can score from anywhere on the floor.
At the time of the trade, Zach Randolph had not played this season. Trading him at the deadline seemed like a no-brainer for the Kings. Once acquired, the Dallas Mavericks waived the 37-year old forward.
Justin Jackson has shown very little improvement since his rookie year last season. In this trade, the Mavs were searching for a team willing to absorb Harrison Barnes‘ nearly $25 million this season and in the process, got back expiring money in Randolph and a flyer on the young Jackson. The Mavericks achieved their goal of opening up cap space for this summer.
Even though they had to take on Barnes’ bad contract, the Kings are still big winners in this trade. They have now filled their starting small forward spot, which was the biggest hole on their roster prior to the deadline. Barnes hasn’t lived up to expectations after he was drafted by the Golden State Warriors seventh overall in 2012. Nevertheless, he still serves as yet another player who can score over 15 points on any give night for the Kings.
The Mavericks, Los Angeles Clippers, New Orleans Pelicans and Memphis Grizzlies all made moves that will make them worse this season and decreased their chances of making the 2019 NBA Playoffs. Their competition worsening, in addition to the acquisition of Barnes, has put the Kings in a prime position to make the postseason.
