Brooklyn Nets: 3 reasons to make a trade approaching deadline
By Alec Liebsch
With the 2019 NBA Trade Deadline in sight, the Brooklyn Nets have good reason to be a part of it. Here are three arguments for them to do something.
As the 2019 NBA Trade Deadline hovers over the sporting world (something the freaking Super Bowl failed to accomplish), the Brooklyn Nets are an interesting wrinkle in the fun of it all. At 28-27, the feel-good story of the association is in a prime position.
To elaborate, the Nets can truly do whatever they want as the deadline approaches. From all the fun young players and assets the front office has so shrewdly amassed in recent years, to the veterans on expiring contracts, nearly every human related to Brooklyn’s basketball operations is of value.
That makes for a fun few days. The Nets can do something, or they can do nothing. They can tread the line between building for now and for later, a void in the universe that most NBA franchises can’t afford to enter.
Hypothetical trades are really fun, because people love “what-ifs” more than reality. But with so much financial litheness at the front office’s disposal, some of those dreams can actually come true.
Consolidating assets for Anthony Davis? Crazier things have happened. Offloading veterans for cheap assets general manager Sean Marks is almost guaranteed to utilize? It’s on the table. If the right deal is in place, Marks will execute it.
Frankly, Brooklyn being in the rumor mill deserves praise on its own. This is the same team that started Timofey Mozgov for a grip last season. Being in a position to control its own destiny is a world Brooklyn hasn’t seen much; it almost feels like something has to go wrong.
Recent history argues against that, as it’s very difficult to find a bad trade on this regime’s record outside of the Allen Crabbe deal. (Marks will find a way to flip him for the No. 1 pick in July.)
There will be a good reason for any trade the front office makes before the deadline; here are three of the best.
