2. Securing the young core

Again, good point guards are hard to come by in the NBA and the Brooklyn Nets have found something in Russell, who is averaging 19.6 points, 6.4 assists and 3.8 rebounds per contest.

Re-signing the 6’5″ guard needs to be a top priority because of the fact that the Nets do not have a solidified core. Granted, the team does have promising young talent in rookie Rodions Kurucs, Spencer Dinwiddie, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Caris LeVert (out injured).

Right now, Brooklyn’s depth at the point guard position is a bit bleak considering Dinwiddie just underwent surgery and will be out for 3-6 weeks.

Without Russell, the Brooklyn Nets could easily be out of the playoff race. The numbers that the Ohio State product is producing for his age is amazing. Since being traded by Los Angeles less than two years ago, the young guard has been putting his head down and working.

The Nets need to re-sign their young guard in order to secure a crucial part of their young core. If Brooklyn does sign a free agent this summer (outside of Kyrie Irving) that player will be able to pair and grow with Russell.

Brooklyn will be able to re-sign Russell without dishing out too much money, and the fact that he is a restricted free agent helps level the playing field come bidding time (if necessary).
