3. Terry Rozier’s contract

Now more than halfway through the 2018-19 NBA season, the Boston Celtics are sitting in fifth place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 31-19. What has Terry Rozier done to contribute to this? Unfortunately, not much.

So far this season, the 24-year-old point guard has found his way onto the court in every single game. Starting in only seven games so far, Rozier is averaging 8.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 22.9 minutes per game.

The Boston Celtics exercised their team option on Rozier’s rookie contract following the 2017-18 season, which pays him $3.1 million this season. He will then become a restricted free agent this summer.

Kyrie Irving announced that he would re-sign with the Celtics this summer, presumably under a supermax deal. Although his intentions have come under doubt lately, the Celtics will prioritize re-signing Irving over Rozier, and they have other big money-makers such as Gordon Hayward, Al Horford and Marcus Smart, plus future money-makers in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. The Celtics just do not have the money for Rozier.

Rozier has gone on record saying he wants to be a starting point guard in the league, and a new contract that reflects that. The Celtics just can’t offer him that, and for that reason, they should trade him for a young prospect with a few years left on his contract before losing him for nothing.
