2019 NBA Trade Deadline: 10 teams that should trade for Anthony Davis
3. Toronto Raptors
It’s kind of terrifying how competitive the Toronto Raptors‘ trade package could be if the Pelicans change their minds about being patient before the upcoming deadline. They’re already second in the East despite Kawhi Leonard missing 14 games, and if Davis entered the fold, they’d be a major threat to the Golden State Warriors.
It’d take sacrificing not one, but two of the team’s most promising prospects in OG Anunoby and Paschal Siakam, not to mention Serge Ibaka and a future first-rounder, but even that steep price might be worth it for a Big 3 of Kawhi, AD and Kyle Lowry.
Siakam is a leading candidate for the league’s Most Improved Player award and an All-Star selection, averaging 15.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game on 55.9 percent shooting. He’s a versatile defender and intelligent offensive weapon, and he’s only 24 years old.
Anunoby hasn’t taken the expected step forward in his second year, but that’s mostly because of Toronto’s extensive wing depth. He’s only posting 7.3 points and 3.0 rebounds in 20.4 minutes per game, but he’s only 21 years old, is still on his rookie deal and showed great promise on both ends last season in a starting role.
Ibaka is a terrific small-ball 5 who is also enjoying an All-Star caliber season, even though he’s only shooting 27 percent from 3. He’s not much of a stretch-5 these days, but he can play either the 4 or the 5, and would be accompanied by two terrific defenders in Siakam and Anunoby.
2021 is the soonest Toronto could offer a first round pick since it owes the San Antonio Spurs this year’s first-rounder, but for New Orleans, that’s a pretty compelling mix of talent for the short-term and sustainable growth for the future.
The Raptors would love making a move like this, not only to add a player like AD and compete for a title this year, but also to convince Leonard they’re fully committed to winning and worth pledging his allegiance to for the long haul.
