5. Houston Rockets

Like the Thunder, the Houston Rockets aren’t shy about making blockbuster moves if it gets them closer to a Larry O’Brien trophy. Westbrook-George-Davis would be an unbelievable trio, but Chris Paul, James Harden and the Brow wouldn’t be too far behind.

Given how many picks the Rockets reportedly put on the table for Jimmy Butler, they probably wouldn’t be averse to making it rain in first round selections this time around too, only in this case, the deal would have to start with Clint Capela and Eric Gordon:

Calling Capela a “prospect” isn’t fair to how good he already is, but at 24 years old, his best days are still ahead of him. For a guy averaging 17.6 points, 12.6 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game on 63.1 percent shooting, that room for improvement is scary. Capela is already an elite rim protector, rim-runner and alley-oop threat in the pick-and-roll.

Gordon is a terrific sixth man and capable starter when called upon, and a deal like this would feature a return home for him, only as a changed and improved player. The additional meat of the deal would be three first-rounders, starting in 2019.

Those first one or two picks might come near the end of the first round, but by 2023, this core will have passed its window for title contention. The Rockets are all in on contending now, with James Harden doing absurd things, so going all in on Davis would be a terrific investment.

Unfortunately, NOLA could probably still do better than this, with more immediate value. The Rockets should definitely shoot their shot, but with so many other suitors lined up, the outcome might wind up being like Game 7 of the 2018 Western Conference Finals all over again.
