2019 NBA Trade Deadline: 10 teams that should trade for Anthony Davis
6. Dallas Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks may appear to have time for a longer rebuild, but Luka Doncic looks ready to win now. As so many other teams around the league can attest, it’s sometimes better to jumpstart that process immediately, rather than wait for young, raw prospects to develop around a superstar capable of competing now.
With Dennis Smith Jr. trade rumors swirling and Harrison Barnes being a good but not great investment, it’s already time for the Mavs to start tailoring their roster around Doncic. If it means giving them both up, along with rookie Jalen Brunson and a pair of future first round picks, so be it.
A dynamic duo of Doncic and Davis is already good enough to make some noise in the West, but with Wonder Boy still being a teen and Davis only being 25, they’d have a sustainable foundation for the future too.
The Pelicans would be getting a 3-and-D wing under team control in Barnes, a new franchise point guard in DSJ and a quality backup in Brunson, as well as Dallas’ first round selections in 2021 and 2023. None of those is a blue chip asset, but they’d at least combine to form something sustainable as the Pelicans navigate through this rebuild.
Unfortunately, this would be a lot to give up without a guarantee that a partnership with Doncic would be enough to entice the Brow into sticking around long-term. The Pelicans could also probably do better than this offer on the trade market.
