Lakers discussed potential Dennis Smith Jr. deal

It’s been known for some time that Dennis Smith Jr. is on the trade block. Only a year after he was drafted to become the future of the Dallas Mavericks franchise, he’s become an expendable asset for one of the Western Conference’s rising rosters.

According to The Athletic‘s Shams Charania, the Lakers are one of the teams to have expressed interest in a potential deal for Smith.

Now that’s surprising to an extent. The Lakers aren’t exactly in need of a point guard, with Lonzo Ball being a former No. 2 overall pick and Rajon Rondo providing the veteran presence off the bench.

Chances are the Lakers were just calling to determine an asking price. While point guard isn’t a huge position of need for Los Angeles, it makes sense they’d be somewhat interested in acquiring Smith. He’s a human highlight reel who can light a fire under an offense and could potentially be a dangerous weapon to deploy alongside James.

Don’t read too deeply into this one. More than anything, it’s an indication that Magic is leaving no stone unturned ahead of the trade deadline.
