There are always questions and debate around this time of year as to who makes the All-Star team. Should the San Antonio Spurs have two All-Stars in the mid-season classic?
The San Antonio Spurs have ridden their two stars to sixth place in the Western Conference. This is an incredible achievement considering how stacked with talent this conference is.
Both LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan have been huge for the Spurs, but do they deserve to be All-Stars this season?
LaMarcus Aldridge
Let us start with the longer-tenured Spurs star first. Aldridge is already a six time All-Star. He has only missed one game since the start of the 2011 season. Lets take a look into why deserves to be a seven time All-Star.
By the numbers, Aldridge is having an impressive year,. He is averaging 20.6 points, 8.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.2 blocks per game. Almost averaging a double-double, Aldridge has again been the backbone of the Spurs front-court.
It is the manner in which Aldridge has accumulated these averages which is why he deserves to be an All-Star this season.
In the first 49 games, Aldridge has scored over 20 points in 27 games. He has scored over 30 points in six games, including a massive 56-point effort in the Jan. 10 double-overtime win against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The Spurs are 5-1 in games where Aldridge has scored over 30 points. This is taking the team on your back and getting results which is a quintessential quality of an All-Star.
Aldridge has also had 17 games with 10 or more rebounds, seven games with more than five assists and seven games or three or more blocks. Again, these are numbers worthy of an All-Star nod.
DeMar Derozan
In his first season not playing for the Toronto Raptors, DeRozan has taken his game to another level. Considering his career with the Raptors, that is a pretty big statement. While he is scoring at his lowest average in four seasons at 21.5 points per game, he has elevated the rest of his game.
DeRozan is having his best year on the boards, averaging 6.2 per game (4.2 per game for his career). He has also taken his play-making up a notch, giving out 6.3 assists per game compared to his career number of 4.2 per game.
DeRozan is becoming the all-around player he should be and it is making him more dangerous. He has nine games where he has scored 30 points or more. In these games the Spurs are 6-3, which is impressive.
On top of this, DeRozan also has eight double-doubles. In these games the Spurs are 7-1. DeRozan has one triple-double and that game the Spurs also won. In games where DeRozan has 30-point double-doubles, the Spurs are 2-0.
In the 15 games noted above where DeRozan has been at an All-Star level, the Spurs are 11-4, this is an impressive win ratio. This also shows DeRozan is capable of putting the franchise on his shoulders and winning, again, the mark of an All-Star.
These two players have the San Antonio Spurs in contention for the playoffs which is incredible considering how deep the Western conference is. So in answer to the question of should the Spurs have two All-Stars, based on their numbers and their impact, the answer is an undeniable yes.
