Cleveland Cavaliers: 10 prospects to watch for in 2019 NBA Draft
By Tony Pesta
6. Kevin Porter Jr. — SG/SF (USC)
Kevin Porter Jr. is a promising young combo wing out of USC. He has the ability to play either the shooting guard or small forward position and can impact a team on both ends of the floor.
He is a smart offensive player, averaging 10.7 points on 50.8 percent shooting in 22.3 minutes a game. Porter rarely attempts shots outside of his comfort zone and is good at getting to his spots. Some of his most impressive highlights include high-flying dunks and heavily contested layups.
Porter has really shined as a defender thus far. He utilizes strong footwork and speed on the perimeter to keep up with opponents and disrupt plays. As he grows into a more polished scorer, his defense will also improve, giving him the potential to be a deadly two-way player.
NBA comparison: Paul George
Paul George was a late bloomer but quickly turned into a premier player on both offense and defense. George is currently forcing his name into MVP and Defensive Player of the Year conversations during one of the best seasons of his career.
I believe that Porter’s game is similar to George in the way that they are two athletic players that have prioritized defense and smart shot selection overall. Porter has room to grow as a shooter if he wants to become a high-volume scorer, but his defensive skills are already there.
