With Carmelo Anthony headed for free agency soon, the Los Angeles Lakers would be wise to push for a signing of the veteran scoring machine.

The pieces are falling into place for Carmelo Anthony to be wearing a Los Angeles Lakers jersey. There are a lot of mixed opinions about the idea as we inch closer to the 2019 NBA Trade Deadline, but the fact of the matter is something needs to change in Los Angeles.

Can Carmelo be the catalyst for this Lakers lineup? It’s anyone’s guess at this point. Expectations were high that he’d help the Houston Rockets compete for a title this season, but his tenure with the club lasted a whopping 10 games. Now he’s been traded to the Chicago Bulls, who don’t plan on letting him see a single minute of action before tossing him into the free agency pool.

When the Bulls finally buy out his contract, the Lakers will be watching. That is, according to ESPN‘s Adrian Wojnarowski, who claims they “maintain interest” in Carmelo, but aren’t willing to go to great lengths to create a roster spot for him.

While that’s likely the case, everything seems to be falling into place for Anthony to sign on the dotted line. The Lakers pursued him during 2014 NBA free agency, and now they could potentially get him at a huge discount — albeit at a much less exciting time in his career.
