Detroit Pistons: 3 players most likely to be traded before deadline
2. Ish Smith
Ish Smith doesn’t bring the same scoring and playmaking that Galloway does, but he grades out as the better player overall in the Player Impact Plus/Minus (PIPM) metric. Defense takes somewhat of a backseat during the regular season, but it gains a renewed importance when the playoffs get started. Smith can help bolster second units that typically surrender a lot of points while providing a steadying presence at a cheap price.
Smith’s contract is only for the remainder of this season, and he is $1 million cheaper than Galloway on a per-year basis. Smith is quite possibly leaving this offseason, so the Pistons will want to get something for him rather than allowing him to walk for nothing.
Just like Galloway, Smith can come off the bench and give a boost to a teams guard rotation. One issue for Smith is that he has never been the most consistent 3-point shooter, which drives his value down.
The Pistons need to be focused on adding pieces for the future with a rebuild still in progress. After the trade for Blake Griffin, they limited their firepower for improving them in the future, but Smith is a piece that can help fix that. Whether they add a second round pick or a developing prospect, both would be better than Smith walking for free this offseason.
