Boston Celtics: 3 trade possibilities for Terry Rozier
3. Phoenix Suns
Why the Celtics say yes:
The Celtics agree to this trade because they need to get value back for Rozier before he potentially leaves in free agency. Daniels has continued to stay in this league because of his ability to shoot the ball.
This season he’s averaging 6.1 points per game, while shooting 40.7 percent from the field and 39.8 percent from 3. The majority of his shots are going to come from the perimeter, which is something any NBA team would enjoy having.
He’s always been a good 3-point shooter, averaging 40.3 percent over his six-year career. He’ll be a free agent this offseason and would come cheap if the Celtics wish to re-sign him. Rozier will likely be walking this offseason because of the money he may demand.
While Daniels may not be as talented as Rozier, Boston is still able to command the Suns’ second round pick in 2020. Barring a major leap next season, Phoenix figures to be another bid for a top pick, making their pick more valuable because it will come early in the second round.
Why the Suns say yes:
The answer to why they would accept this trade is pretty simple: The Phoenix Suns need a point guard. The team has struggled to find something to stick this season at the one spot, as they’ve plugged in shooting guard Devin Booker as their point guard on offense, pairing him with De’Anthony Melton in the backcourt. It’s worked to some degree, but the team would like to find a more permanent solution.
Rozier would be a starter on the Suns and has always looked better when he’s not coming off the bench. The Suns have had interest in the former Louisville Cardinal in the past and seeing them potentially pursue him would not be a surprise.
The Suns get better value by receiving Rozier and dealing Daniels in this trade. The second round pick is the bigger asset that normal in this case, but the Suns need to figure out their situation at the 1. Adding Rozier at this point instead of pursuing him in free agency will allow the Suns to see how the team meshes together before throwing a lot of money his way.
The Suns would be able to get a good idea as to whether Rozier can be their long-term starter. Adding him would shore up a lot of the team’s issues at the time, but they still have a long ways to go. Regardless of where anyone is in the standings, an NBA team needs a point guard in order to be successful.
