5. Detroit Pistons

The Detroit Pistons need a point guard upgrade and want to get Reggie Jackson off the books. Dallas needs to start putting more suitable pieces around Doncic and could use a long-term Wesley Matthews replacement. This isn’t rocket science.

Jackson is hardly attractive from the Mavs’ point of view, but he’s only under contract for one season after this one and could fill a more appropriate role as sixth man. They’d also nab a terrific defender in Stanley Johnson, who could fill the void of Matthews as he heads for free agency this summer.

It’s no secret that Jackson should not be a starting point guard in this league after being unable to stay healthy for the last few seasons, but when he was in a sixth man role with the Oklahoma City Thunder, he was at his most effective until injuries kicked in.

Under head coach Rick Carlisle, who’s notorious for coaxing magic out of whatever haphazard second unit he throws out there, Jackson could establish himself as a microwave scorer off the bench again, even if he’s a poor fit alongside Doncic himself.

As for Johnson, his offensive game (8.0 points per game this year) and 3-point stroke (26.6 percent) are virtually nonexistent, but he’d contribute on the defensive end at least, filling Matthews’ role of defensive stopper. He’s a restricted free agent this summer, and could probably be retained for a relatively low price depending on how he performs.

The Pistons, meanwhile, get the new franchise point guard they’ve needed for years in DSJ. Matthews will help spread the floor for Blake Griffin and Andre Drummond with his 38.6 percent 3-point shooting before his contract expires this summer.
