The blockbuster trade

Consisting of seven players, here’s how the deal appears, which works out financially on the ESPN Trade Machine:

For the Heat:

Pros: When healthy and engaged, Wall has proven to be one of the most explosive two-way point guards in the league. While he has had his share of injuries throughout his career, Wall only recently turned 28, and is seemingly in the absolute prime of his career.

For a team craving a genuine star, this could be finally the time the Heat land a real difference-maker having missed out on several occasions over the past few years. Jason Smith is included to balance out salaries.

As an aside, Wall spends a good portion of his summer each year in Miami, with the following Instagram post just one of collection he posted earlier this year:

Cons: Naturally, the $169 million owed to Wall commencing next season is an enormous gamble. Although not quite on the same level, the Heat already did a similar thing recently when they awarded Goran Dragic a five-year, $85 million deal in the summer of 2015. Now 32, Dragic is beginning to show signs of decline, so this is certainly something that would need some serious consideration before being undertaken.

For the Wizards:

Pros: Simply breaking up the current stench that surrounds the team can only be a positive. On a personnel level, the addition of a steady, veteran point guard in Ricky Rubio could prove to be an ideal sidekick to Bradley Beal in the backcourt. Additionally, Alec Burks has proven this season in limited minutes that he’s still capable of filling up the box score, and would be a welcome addition to the Wizards’ second unit.

Most importantly, not only do the Wizards rid themselves of Wall’s contract, the contracts of Rubio and Burks each come off the books at the end of this season, thus creating over $26 million in cap space next summer.

Furthermore, the Wizards are welcoming aboard center Bam Adebayo, who at just 21 years of age has already displayed glimpses of his incredible athletic potential. With a future first round pick also finding its way to Washington, the various components of this deal all add up to terrific value for the departing Wall.

Cons: As a five-time All-Star and former No. 1 overall pick, talents such as Wall don’t simply grow on trees. So while the deal may appear financially appealing, there’s no guarantees this will translate to on-court success.

For the Jazz:

Pros: While he’s currently struggling from the field, Goran Dragic represents a huge upgrade at the point guard spot from an offensive standpoint. Coming off his debut All-Star game, Dragic has already registered seven games of at least 20 points this season despite being hobbled by a knee injury from which he is currently sidelined.

In addition, Rodney McGruder has proven to be one of the most improved players in the league this season, having started all 17 games and shooting at an excellent 41.3 percent clip from 3-point range. When you include his defensive capabilities, McGruder would be an excellent addition to the Jazz’s second unit at both ends of the floor.

Cons: Considering Dragic still has another year remaining on his contract, and McGruder is up for an extension next summer, this deal could somewhat eat into the cap flexibility of the Jazz both next season and beyond.
