3 ways a Spencer Dinwiddie trade could help the Brooklyn Nets

Despite strong play so far this season, the Brooklyn Nets may want to give consideration to the idea of trading soon-to-be free agent Spencer Dinwiddie.

Fan favorite Spencer Dinwiddie has been lightning for the Brooklyn Nets. Coming off the bench, the 25-year-old guard is averaging 14.6 points, 4.6 assists, 2.6 rebounds, and 0.6 steals in 27.5 minutes per game. Dinwiddie has become the No. 1 scoring option for the second unit and doing it quite well. He is draining 1.9 3-pointers a night at 37.9 percent, with an overall effective field goal percentage of 54.8.

Dinwiddie has developed into a key player for Brooklyn and is undoubtedly worthy of a starting role in the league. It is unlikely that this role will exist for him with the Nets, as head coach Kenny Atkinson seems committed to keeping D’Angelo Russell in the starting lineup, and a combined backcourt of Russell and Dinwiddie has yet to translate to success for the team.

Brooklyn heads into an important summer following the end of this season, where it could have the cap space to go big-game hunting with two max slots and hope to build the foundation for the roster of the future. Dinwiddie is currently in the last year of his contract with the team and will be an unrestricted free agent this summer.

The Nets may need him more now that Caris LeVert is out for the foreseeable future, but if Dinwiddie isn’t in their long-term plans and the possibility of him re-signing with the team in the offseason seems bleak, general manager Sean Marks and the Nets front office have another avenue to explore to help the franchise’s future: a Spencer Dinwiddie trade.
