Best rebounder in Detroit Pistons history: Andre Drummond

Longtime Detroit Pistons center Bill Laimbeer seems like the obvious choice to represent this team on this list, especially considering his longevity and his reputation for his, uh, let’s say “scrappy” style of play. While Laimbeer indeed holds the franchise marks for total, offensive and defensive rebounds, Andre Drummond will likely surpass him in all of those categories.

He’s already the far superior rebounder if you look at his per game and rate stats. As of this season, Drummond has the highest all-time rebounds per game average in franchise history (13.4) and the highest rebounding percentage (24.2). In comparison, Laimbeer ranks ninth in total rebounding rate (16.8) and didn’t even crack the top-10 for boards per game.

At only 25 years old, Drummond already ranks third all-time on the franchise’s defensive rebounding list (4,089), fourth on the offensive rebounds list (2,226) and fifth on the total rebounds list (6,315). Unless Drummond leaves Detroit or suffers a career-altering injury, him being at the top of all the Pistons’ rebounding lists seems like a foregone conclusion.

The two-time rebounding champion was drafted ninth overall in the 2014 NBA Draft, behind the likes of Anthony Davis, Bradley Beal and Damian Lillard. Coming out of the UConn, Drummond was something of a project in his rookies season.

His development was further hindered by the Pistons constantly pairing him with the likes of Greg Monroe and Josh Smith, who clogged the paint and made it hard for Drummond to do what he does best.

With Drummond now entrenched as the main post player — they have Blake Griffin, but he can play on the perimeter — it has allowed him to become a rebounding machine, perhaps the best this franchise has ever seen.
