Best rebounder in Philadelphia 76ers history: Charles Barkley

If you asked anyone under the age of 25 who Charles Barkley was, they would probably say that he’s the guy that cracks jokes on TNT with Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith and Ernie Johnson. As time marches on, younger basketball fans will know Barkley from his broadcasting career more than his playing days. That’s a shame because in his prime “Sir Charles” was exceptional.

Barkley was one of the most gifted forwards to ever play the sport. In a way, he was a precursor to a lot of the forwards today who can handle the ball and run the fast break. Draymond Green and Blake Griffin come to mind. His most identifiable trait however, was his rebounding. He wasn’t called “The Round Mound of Rebound” because it sounded catchy.

Barkley spent eight seasons with the team that drafted him fifth overall in the 1984 NBA Draft in the Philadelphia 76ers. In that time, he blossomed into one of the league’s top players.

Despite being short for a power forward — he only stood 6-foot-6, and that was probably a generous measurement — the former Auburn standout used his blocky frame and proper positioning to grab rebound after rebound. And unlike many forwards during that time, Barkley could take the ball down the floor as well as any guard.

As of 2018, Barkley has the most offensive and defensive rebounds in 76ers franchise history. He also ranks third on the team’s all-time total rebounds list and is fourth all-time in rebounds per game. Simply put, Barkley was great at getting rebounds.
