Best rebounder in Miami Heat history: Rony Seikaly

If you were to guess which player was the best rebounder in Miami Heat history, your knee-jerk answer would probably be Alonzo Mourning. Quite frankly, that’s a good player to pick. It’s hard to argue against a player that ranks second all-time in offensive, defensive and total rebounds.

It’s also understandable if you picked Udonis Haslem, who STILL plays for them (kind of). After all, he ranks first in those same three categories. I would even understand if you wanted to use a more modern player like Hassan Whiteside, considering he holds the franchise’s all-time lead for boards per game, as of 2018. Allow me to add in a more unconventional choice: Rony Seikaly.

Now, it’s easy to forget about Seikaly if you didn’t watch the Heat in the early 1990’s. However, his résumé makes a convincing case for him being the Heat’s best rebounder. As of 2018, Seikaly ranks second all-time behind Whiteside in rebounds per game, while also ranking fourth in defensive rebounds and third in offensive and total rebounds.

The rate stats back him up, too. He has the third highest defensive rebounding percentage, the fourth highest rebounding percentage and the sixth highest offensive board rate.

Aside from Mourning, the players in front of Seikaly on the leaderboards either compiled their stats over a long period of time (Haslem, Dwyane Wade) or didn’t stay with the team long enough to add to their rate stats (Jamaal Magloire comes to mind). Seikaly had the perfect mix of good rate stats and gaudy counting stats, which is why he made this list.
